BUET Designs New Model for Safer Battery-Powered Rickshaws

Interim Government Moves to Regulate Rickshaw Operations in Dhaka

The interim government has taken a new step to curb the uncontrolled operation of battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka.  Gulshan Society, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and other interested parties met with the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Tuesday. Finding alternatives to unlicensed battery rickshaws was the main goal, especially in affluent neighborhoods with a high concentration of foreign residents. During the meeting, DSCC officials showcased BUET’s newly designed rickshaw model.

According to sources, DSCC will submit the BUET model along with their recommendations to the Ministry of Local Government. Once approved, manufacturers will be instructed to produce rickshaws following this specific design. The new model will also go through a technical committee’s verification process before receiving a city corporation license. Any rickshaw operating without a license will not be allowed on the streets.

Officials plan to gradually phase out the current battery-powered rickshaws once the new models are introduced. BUET’s design is intended not just for Dhaka but for nationwide use. Mohammad Ejaz, the administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), confirmed that the existing rickshaws would be completely replaced.

He explained that the new model would feature a foot-operated brake system instead of the traditional hand brakes. Moreover, a regulated motor will control the speed of the rickshaws. Manufacturers will only receive production licenses if they comply with the technical standards set by the committee. Ejaz also mentioned that drivers may undergo special training programs to ensure safe operations.

Currently, battery-powered rickshaws not only flood Dhaka’s alleyways but also roam freely on major roads. Controlling them has proven to be a major challenge. Incidents involving aggressive behavior from rickshaw drivers toward passengers and motorcyclists have recently escalated concerns, prompting urgent action.

Former Chief Justice Khairul Haque Sent to Jail

Arrest follows murder case linked to Jatrabari uprising

Former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque has been sent to jail over his alleged role in the killing of Abdul Qaium Ahad. The incident took place during the recent mass uprising in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.

On Wednesday (July 24), Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanaullah gave the order. The court acted after police brought Khairul in and asked to keep him detained during the investigation.

A team from the Detective Branch (DB) arrested Khairul Haque from his house,Dhanmondi early in the morning. The arrest was confirmed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman.

According to the case details, Ahad was shot on July 18 near the Kajla Police Box. Witnesses say he collapsed from the first shot. Then, the Jatrabari Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Abul Hasan allegedly fired more shots and killed him on the spot.

Ahad’s father, Alauddin, filed the case on July 6. He named 467 people as accused. Among them are former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Justice Khairul Haque. Khairul is listed as the 44th accused.

Khairul Haque worked as the ’19th Chief Justice’ of Bangladesh from October 2010 to May 2011. After that, he became chairman of the Law Commission in 2013. He held the position through several reappointments.

The mass uprising from students in July 2024 led to clashes across the country. Many people of Bangladesh were killed and many injured. Rights groups have demanded a full, fair investigation into each reported death.

Khairul’s arrest is unprecedented. No former chief justice in Bangladesh has ever faced jail over such charges. His detention has triggered strong public reaction and growing political debate.

Police haven’t shared the incident when he will appear in court again. The investigation is still ongoing, and more names could be added to the case with Khairul Haque.

New Constitution and Justice Demanded at Joypurhat Rally
Neglected Joypurhat to Be Included in July Declaration, Says NCP Leader

Joypurhat, July 5, 2025 (BSS): The National Citizen Party (NCP) has pledged to include the voice of the neglected Joypurhat district in its upcoming July Declaration, set to be unveiled on August 3 at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. NCP Convener Nahid Islam made this announcement while addressing a public rally at Shaheed Dr. Abul Kashem Moydan in Joypurhat.

Speaking at the event organized by the district chapter of NCP, Nahid Islam praised those who protested against what he described as the authoritarian rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “We launched the July Movement to end dictatorship, change power, and remove the influence of mafias. But even after a year, no real change has come,” he said. “We want to build a new Bangladesh—free from fascism and injustice. We won’t allow the other tyrant to rise.”

He emphasized the importance to be free and get freedom, noting that defending it is even harder than achieving it. “We must remain alert so that our freedom is not lost again. That’s why NCP was formed—to ensure the right to food, education, and proper healthcare for all.”

The rally was chaired by district coordinator Firoz Alamgir and also featured speeches from regional organizers Sarjis Alam (North), Hasnat Abdullah (South), NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, and Joint Convener Monira Parvin.

Hasnat Abdullah voiced strong criticism of corruption and nepotism. “There’s no space now for corruption or family-centered leadership,” he said. “We know who runs the ruling party’s businesses. We hear stories about Sheikh Hasina suddenly re-entering from across the border. Even Indian PM Modi sometimes pushes people into Bangladesh. If Hasina is pushed in, we’ll deal with her.”

He added that those involved in the so-called midnight election are now being publicly shamed. “In our party, only the competent will be chosen as leaders,” he declared.

The rally ended with renewed calls for justice, reform, and a new constitution to shape a fair and equal Bangladesh.

How Safe Are You from COVID in 2025 After Vaccinated?

Can Vaccinated People Still Get COVID in 2025?

Doctors say shots still work—but you’re not completely risk-free

We’re living in 2025, and while the world runs more normal, COVID hasn’t disappeared. We know Vaccines have helped a lot. But the big question remains: if you’ve had the shots, can you still catch the virus or protect us?

The answer must be positive. You can. But the story doesn’t end there.
And on that front, they’ve done an incredible job.

If you’ve had all your doses, especially with a booster, your body knows how to fight back. That doesn’t mean you won’t test positive. But it does mean the virus probably won’t make you seriously sick.

Doctors explain it like this: immunity fades with time. If your last shot was over a year ago, your protection isn’t as strong. And if you’re older or dealing with health problems, your risk may be higher too.

New variants also add to the mix. Some spread faster. Others sneak past some of your body’s defenses. Still, vaccinated people do much better than those who didn’t get any protection at all.

Dr. Fahmida Karim, who treats COVID patients in Dhaka, says, “It’s not about avoiding the virus. It’s about avoiding disaster. That’s what the vaccine does.”

Recent data supports her words. Most people who end up in the ICU now are unvaccinated or haven’t had a booster in a long time.

Corona Experts still advise to maintain some basic safety steps. Stay home, avoid crowd, indoor spaces during surges. And yes—wash your hands.

Getting a booster this year, especially before winter, is a good move. It keeps your immune system alert and ready.

So can you still get COVID after getting the vaccine in 2025? Sure. But your odds of getting very sick are much, much lower. And that’s what counts.
